Debt counselling, governed by the National Credit Act, is a regulated process that helps over-indebted consumers restructure debt through registered Debt Counsellors who are accredited and registered with the National Credit Regulator. Consumers struggling with payments may qualify for reduced interest rates and extended repayment terms, making monthly instalments more affordable while covering living costs. Debt Counsellors work with attorneys to obtain court orders, making the repayment plan legally binding and offering legal protection. Once all debts are repaid, the consumer receives a clearance certificate, and their “under debt review” status is removed.
